and local real property taxes in addition to their regular standard deduction. The deduction
is limited to the lower of $500 ($1,000 for joint re,turns) or the amount of real property
taxes paid. There is also a new refundable credit available to first-time homebuyers. It is
equal to the lesser of 10% of the purchase price of the home, or $7,500 ($3,750 for those
using the Married Filing Separately filing status). The credit is paid back over 15 years in
equal installments starting with the second year following the credit year.
