The Arlington Times/r he Marysville Globe Retired art teacher featured at Northlight Gallery 8 ecial to The Weekender EVERETT —— A special art and design showcase, “Russell Day: Catalyst," includes work by Day and 20 of his former students at the Everett Com- munity College Northlight Gal- lery through March 21. The show includes a wide range of artworks, such as jewelry, architecture, paintings, drawings and several pieces that some of the artists are cre~ ating especially for the show. The show honors the legacy of the retired EVCC art instructor, Russell Day, who has impacted many regional artists. The show includes a special reception with the artists on Feb. 8 to honor Day. Day, who taught at Everett Junior College and Everett Community College from 1948 to 1974, “inspired generations of students to become artists," said EVCC art instructor Sandra Lepper, Director of the North— light Gallery. He created the first EJC art gallery in the 19503 and inspired many well—known artists includ- ing internationally known pho~ tographer Chuck Close and glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. . The show was inspired by EVCC photography instructor Lloyd Weller, who joined Lep- per in yisiting Day and his wife Marjorie, also a retired Everett Community College instructor, in June. “Russell Day was the most inspirational person I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,“ said Weller, who joined EVCC in 1969 when Russell Tue Weexenoen was the chairman of the Art Department. ‘ “He was an extraordinary teacher with extraordinary artistic skill." Many of Day’s former stu- dents recall his extremely chal- lenging art and design courses, in which he focused on teach- ing art fundamentals. “There are students of his who kept their portfolios from the 1950s because they meant so much to them," said Lepper, who plans to include Several works from those early portfo— lios in the show. An award-winning piece of jewelry created by Day will be included in the show and then put on permanent display in the Northlight Gallery. “This show and. the special events we have planned are probably some of the most meaningful ways we‘ve ever honored someone who left a lasting legacy at the college,” Weller said. EvCC’s Northlight Gallery is located inside the Parks Student Union Building. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to pm, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 pm, Thursdays and Fridays. Special gallery hours will be added for this show on Satur- days from 11 a.m. to 2 pm. Everett Community College is located at 2000 Tower St. in north Everett, two blocks west of North Broadway between 10th and Tower Streets.
